Programme Title Change - From BBA in Hotel and Tourism Management to BBA in Hospitality and Real Estate

With effect from the 2017-18 intake, the title of SHTM’s undergraduate programme BBA in Hotel and Tourism Management will change to BBA in Hospitality and Real Estate.

SHTM offers degree programmes with an industry focus. We deliver a curriculum from both the ownership and management perspectives. Our curriculum design philosophy is to provide courses that integrate theory and practice, are grounded in well recognized academic disciplines, capture new trends/issues in research and industry practices, and meet students’ and employers’ demand for career-essential knowledge and skills. We constantly monitor our curriculum based on these criteria and decide to initiate some strategic changes in the school’s curriculum focus from 2017-18.

The title of our undergraduate programme will change from BBA in Hotel and Tourism Management to BBA in Hospitality and Real Estate. The curriculum will also undergo a comprehensive revision and a two-stream curriculum will be offered. The Hospitality Stream will be an extension from the hotel management focus to a broader field of hospitality. The plan is to educate students in developing and managing businesses in which hospitality service is a crucial success factor. These include not only conventional hospitality industries such as hotels, restaurants, airlines, events, clubs, and cruises but also businesses with an increasing demand for hospitality service expertise (e.g., healthcare, elderly care, private wealth investment). The Real Estate Stream will be an extension from the real estate finance focus to a wider range of real estate activities. We plan to build a more comprehensive Real Estate curriculum and offer courses covering finance/investment as well as planning, development, and management.

By changing the programme name and curriculum, we would like to position our programme as one that integrates Hospitality and Real Estate education under the Business School. Students will understand the hospitality and real estate businesses from both ownership and management perspectives. While the Real Estate stream focuses on planning, developing, and investing in the “assets” (e.g., buildings), the Hospitality stream focuses on the “service” element – how to improve service quality, ensure customer satisfaction, and enhance organizational performance. The integration of hospitality and real estate education will give our program a unique competitive edge as we would be able to include both the hardware and software issues of different classes of hospitality assets. To the best of our knowledge, no other hospitality and/or real estate programs in Hong Kong or Asia offer such a learning approach.
